Nigeria continued their impressive performance at the 2024 African Military Games with a commanding 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso in the men’s volleyball event on Tuesday in Abuja. This triumph marked Nigeria’s second win of the tournament, following their opening match victory against Sierra Leone on Monday.
The Nigerian team dominated Burkina Faso, taking the first set 25-10, with SLT Seiyefa Dikiyai’s exceptional spikes proving unstoppable. Despite Burkina Faso’s improved determination in the second set, they were unable to counter Nigeria’s firepower. Elisha Anebi’s precise setups to Emmanuel Briggs and Cyril Iritabor played a crucial role in securing a 25-16 win in the second set.
The third set saw Nigeria maintain their control, finishing with a 25-19 scoreline. SLT Seiyefa Dikiyai, whose performance stood out throughout the match, was deservedly named the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Head coach MWO Solomon Zango expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “The boys executed our strategies with confidence and teamwork, especially in the first set. SLT Seiyefa Dikiyai’s performance was outstanding, and the team’s collective effort was key to our success.”
Zango also emphasized the need for consistency, adding, “We are facing tougher challenges ahead, but if we maintain our focus and unity, we can continue to achieve great results in this tournament.”
In the opening match on Monday, Nigeria had comfortably defeated Sierra Leone 3-0 in another commanding performance. These back-to-back victories have solidified Nigeria’s reputation as a formidable force in the tournament.
Elsewhere in the competition, Ghana defeated Sierra Leone 3-0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-10), with Gyamerah Augustine named MVP. Algeria also overcame Kenya 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-15, 26-24), with Dour Djabir earning MVP honors for his impressive display.
With their strong start, Nigeria is poised to make a significant impact as the tournament progresses. Their focus now shifts to maintaining this momentum in their quest for the title.
