Jack Draper has become only the fourth British man to reach the US Open singles semi-finals in the Open era. His victories over Zhang Zhizhen, Facundo Diaz Acosta, Botic van de Zandschulp, Tomas Machac, and Alex de Minaur have propelled him to the final four, where he will face world number one Jannik Sinner.
Draper’s journey to this point has been notable. Although he was seen as a promising talent early on in British tennis circles, he first gained wider recognition during the Wimbledon juniors in 2018. At just 16, Draper impressed at the All England Club by advancing through the rounds.
In the quarter-finals, he overcame Lorenzo Musetti, who would later reach the men's semi-finals at Wimbledon this year. Draper then triumphed in a grueling semi-final against Nicolas Majia with scores of 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), and 19-17. Despite his exhaustion from such a marathon match, Draper lost to Tseng Chun-hsin from Chinese Taipei in the final. Nevertheless, his performance indicated that he was a rising star.
This year has been a breakout one for Draper. He claimed his first ATP title at the Stuttgart Open in June, which elevated him to British number one status for the first time. Jack Draper now ranked number one in Britain overtook Andy Murray who held the post for a very long time.
His standout moment came a few days later at Queen’s, where he faced Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in the second round. Despite Alcaraz's 13-match winning streak on grass, Draper showed remarkable composure.
"Coming to Queen's for a home tournament and being British number one might have added pressure, but I actually feel more relaxed, “Draper remarked. "I trust my game and know I'm going to be tough to beat”.
Jack Draper (25) faces Jack Sinner (1) tomorrow in the U.S. Open semi-final.
