Eight teams are set to compete at the TotalEnergies CAF Futsal AFCON Morocco 2024. Morocco accepted to host the tournament after Mozambique withdrew. This is the 7th edition of the quadrennial event. Having started in 1996 (The tournament didn't hold in 2012 since a replacement was not found after the earlier hosts, Burkina Faso withdrew).
The competition draw, which took place on 7th of March this year was organized by Moroccan football icon Noureddine Naybet. The tournament this year is scheduled to be held at Moulay Prince Abdallah and IBN Yassine Halls in Rabat from April 11 to April 21, 2024.
The draw has resulted in exciting match-ups in both groups. In Group A, tournament hosts and defending champions Morocco are joined by Angola, who finished third in 2020, 1996 runners-up Ghana, and Zambia, who are returning to the tournament after missing out in the previous edition in 2020.
In Group B, Egypt who fell short in the 2020 final are drawn against 2008 champions Libya, as well Namibia and Mauritania who are both making their debuts at the continental finals.
Egypt are currently the most successful TotalEnergies CAF Futsal AFCON Nation with three titles, followed by the defending champions Morocco who have won two titles. Meanwhile, Libya will be vying for a second title after their 2008 triumph as hosts.
Egypt won the inaugural tournament in 1996 and made it there in a row after winning it 2000 and 2004.
Only three spots are reserved for three African teams. The top two teams in each group will progress to the semi-finals of the tournament. This event also acts as a qualifier for the FIFA Futsal World Cup. The winner of the tournament will thereby earn automatic qualification to the futsal world championship in Uzbekistan from September 14 to October 6, 2024.
