Paes, aged 60, is stepping into his inaugural role as the head coach of a national team, following stints as an assistant with Brazil, France, and Czechia over the past decade. With nearly three decades of coaching experience in France, where he amassed eight national titles, and subsequent ventures in Ukraine and Japan, Paes brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.
His primary objective with Iran is to secure qualification for the Paris Olympics in 2024 through the VNL 2024. To this end, he has signed a short-term contract, extendable beyond the Games.
The coach expressed optimism about his team's qualification for the Olympics. He emphasized how the Fans' support would go a long way.
Iran did not qualify for the Paris Olympics during the previous year's Volleyball Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. As a result, they must now compete for one of the last five spots available in the Games, which will be determined based on the FIVB World Rankings. Currently ranked 15th, Iran faces competition from seven other national teams also vying for Olympic qualification. To secure a spot in Paris, Iran must outperform at least four of these teams in the VNL 2024.
Additionally, one of the remaining five tickets is reserved for the highest-ranked African national team, as no African teams have qualified thus far.
