After coming from a thrilling semi-final clash with Serbia, Italy defeated Australia on Sunday to win her first Davis cup title after 47 years. The Italian pair, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego defeated the Serbian pair of world number one Novak Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic.
Italy last won the cup in 1976 and since then had only managed to reach the Davis cup final on four occasions. After defeating the Serbian team 2-1, the Italians went into the final in high spirits spearheaded by world number four Jannik Sinner. A dominant display from the Italian duo (this time it was Jannik Sinner and Matteo Arnaldi) ensured that the Italians had their hands on the Davis cup title.
Arnaldi defeated Alexie Popyrin of Australia 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in the first singles match to put Italy 1-0 up in Malaga, Spain. Then Sinner sealed the cup win with a dominant win over De Mirraur 6-3, 6-0.
Unlike Australia who had won the Davis cup title 28 times and were in search of their 29th title, the Italians had won it once and were hoping to end their 47-year long wait, which they did in style, handing Australia their second defeat in two finals after been previously beaten by Canada in last year’s cup final.
The Davis cup is a competition where tennis players represent their countries. Match starts with two singles match, followed by a double. The best team could be decided in the singles as was the case of Italy who secured two wins out of a possible three.
There was a joyous atmosphere as the Italian team flooded the court to celebrate with teammate Sinner, who sealed the victory for Italy.
