Tennis star Serena Williams looked a better player than her previous game as she started strongly against the Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari, taking the first set in just 37 minutes.
Sakkari, who knocked out Serena Williams in the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters just days ago was hoping and prepared to make it two in a row.
Williams, having lost to Sakkari days ago, had some making up to do as she went into this round of 16 tie.
The 22-year-old came back swinging in the second set as she took a close tie break from the six-time champion and went into the third set fighting for a second victory.
All fortunes turned to Serena Williams in the third round though as she discovered her best tennis to come from a break down to win the game 6-3,6-7(6-8),6-3.
An elated Williams said, “I just kept fighting” “she was doing so well, she was being aggressive and I knew I needed to do the same thing”.
Williams is on course to set a record equaling Margaret Court’s in acquiring 24 Grand Slams Singles titles as she goes against Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova, who is making her debut in the US Open quarter-finals.
