The inaugural Esports World Cup (EWC), hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in August 2024, made history as one of the largest esports events ever. With over 500 million viewers and 250 million hours of content consumed, it set the stage for global esports. Team Falcons emerged as the first Club Champion, securing $7 million in prize money. The event spanned eight weeks, featuring competitions across 22 games like Call of Duty, League of Legends, and Fortnite.
Over 200 clubs competed, with sold-out crowds in Riyadh's Boulevard City, transforming it into a gaming hub. The tournament also witnessed a peak of 3.5 million concurrent viewers during the League of Legends final, where esports legend Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok led T1 to victory. The festival attracted more than 2 million visitors, and the total prize pool exceeded $60 million, the largest in esports history.
The EWC’s success highlights the growing global impact of esports. The next edition will still be held at Riyadh in July and August next year. Leaders in gaming and sports, including HRH Prince Faisal bin Bandar and Ralf Reichert, emphasized how esports is reshaping global culture and business, creating new opportunities in sports and entertainment.
