The African Games of 2023 in Accra, Ghana, concluded successfully on Saturday, showcasing outstanding performances in both outdoor and indoor sports. Egypt emerged as the top achievers, securing a remarkable total of 189 medals, including 101 golds, while Ghana's prowess in team sports also stood out.
The 13th edition of the African Games in Ghana witnessed Egypt's dominance with 189 medals in total, consisting of 101 gold medals, 46 silver medals, and 42 bronze medals. Surpassing Nigeria, which secured second place with 120 medals out of which 47 were gold, 33 were silver, and 40 were bronze,. South Africa claimed third place with 106 medals, 32 golds, 32 silvers, and 42 bronzes.
Nigeria took second with 120 medals.
Other countries that complete the top five are Algeria with 114 medals (29 gold, 38 silver, and 47 bronze) and Tunisia with 87 medals (21 gold, 27 silver, and 39 bronze).
The host country, Ghana, is in sixth place in the final medal standings with 68 medals (19 gold, 29 silver, and 20 bronze).
Notably, the Accra 2023 African Games highlighted exceptional team performances from the host nation as well as other nations across various indoor sports disciplines.
Basketball 3x3
In basketball 3x3, Algeria staged a comeback from a halftime deficit to clinch gold in the men's competition with a 16-11 victory, while Mali triumphed over Nigeria 21-11 in the women's category. The Democratic Republic of Congo beat Benin to finish third.
Egypt top the table with 189 medals.
VOLLEYBALL
The Egyptian men's volleyball team secured the gold medal at the end of the tournament, beating Kenya 3-0 in the final. The team was watched by Egypt's Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhy, who attended the match and received the flag for the next edition of the Games, which Egypt will host in 2027. Ghana finished third after beating Cameroon 3-2. Ghana won their quarter-final match against Nigeria to reach the semi-final, where they lost to Egypt.
In the women's competition, it was the other way around, as Kenya defeated Ghana (3-0).
With this victory and the gold medal in men's volleyball, Egypt breaks the record of over 100 golf medals in the African Games.
