Introducing the game:
Poker is an international game played in different countries across the world. It is a card game in which a dealer issue cards and players place bets on who has the best hand (refers to the group of cards you are holding) according to the variable rules you are playing. In poker, a player must call or match a bet, raise the bet or concede. The game poker is most popular in America where it has its major background from.
It is called the National card game of the United States and can be played at home, in casino clubs, in community card games and online. It is a game played with a pack of 52 cards, sometimes with the addition of one or two Jokers (A Joker can be used to replace any of the four cards needed to make up a complete Four of a Kind). Poker appears in various forms and only a player who understands the values of the poker hands and the principles of betting will thrive at the game.
An improvement on the game in various places include two-pack playing; where two packs of different colours are used to speed up the game. Poker is a betting game but requires great skill.
Common Terms to understand the game of Poker
- Ante: The minimum amount of money you need to bet so you are eligible to play.
- All-in: this is state when a player has pushed all of their cash or chips into the pot. A player is 'all-in' if he or she has done this.
- Call: a very important term in the poker game. It means the player will put the minimum amount needed into the pot for the next player to bet.
- Cash games: this is a game played with cash instead of poker chips.
- Chips: Aside the use of cash, poker is played using chips. They come in different colors usually red, white, blue, green and black. The dealer assigns values today chips prior to the start of the game and exchanges cash from the players for the prices on the chips.
- Dealer: a dealer doesn't play the game but deals the cards to the remaining player and shuffle the cards after each hand.
- Hands: in most cases, a poker hand consists of five cards. The various combinations of poker hands rank from ‘five of a kind' (the highest) to ‘no pair or nothing' (the lowest). It could be five cards you were dealt with or a combination of five cards and the cards of the community.
- Pot: this is where all the money (if playing with cash) or chips goes into. It is usually at the center of the table whenever you ante up, you place your money in the pot. The winner of the game takes the full worth of cash in the pot.
- Pot limit: each player is only allowed to bet with a money range starting at the ante (minimum) and ending at the amount in the pot. This is the pot limit.
- Raise: this is when a bet higher than the minimum is placed. It causes all bets to go up to the new set amount and other players have to either call or fold.
